The first ever winner of the Sports Personality of the year Sir Chris Chataway has passed away after a two and a half year battle with cancer. One of the most iconic men in running history was part of the threesome which saw Roger Bannister run the sub four-minute mile in 1954. The former 5,000 metres world record-holder was knighted in 1995 for his services to aviation industry after chairing the Civil Aviation industry.

Mr Chataway said he and his siblings “grew up with him as a person, not as a runner”, adding: “Of course we all thought it was remarkable. We all saw the old footage, but I think as a child that’s not what you focus on in a parent. – The independent, 19 January 2014.
