Hüma Chia Energy Gel Review

We bumped into Jon Denis from Fit Brands last week and we got on to the subject of energy gels and he introduced us to the ‘new kid on the block’, Hüma.

The idea for Hüma was born in the sands of Iraq. In the summer of 2009 a US Army soldier named 1st Lieutenant McCollum was charged with leading gruelling missions throughout Iraq. At the time he was reading a book about the Tarahumara, a tribe of Mexican Indians who regularly compete in epic 100+ mile races as part of their culture. To fuel themselves on these ultra-marathons, they use a special chia seed blend. He figured if it worked for them in Mexico, maybe it would work for him in Iraq. It did and the results were astounding and Hüma was born.1

One of the key philosophies of Hüma is a ‘All-Natural’ ingredient. It’s refreshing to see that you can easily pronounce everything on the back of the packet without needing a degree in chemistry to understand what you’re putting into your body. Most of the competitors use more than twice as many ingredients and they certainly aren’t all natural; AcesulfameK, Sodium Citrate and Potassium Sorbate are just some of the E-numbers and additives found in other energy gels.

Hüma energy gels are the most natural tasting energy gels we have trialled at i-Run, there’s a welcomed absence of the synthetic taste normally associated with the other products on the market. Our taste testers all remarked on how the product tasted the same as what was written on the packet.

It’s always difficult to pinpoint why you feel a certain way in training and there will always be good days and bad days. The run after using Hüma was certainly a good day, it was one of those runs where you feel you’re floating along effortless and you could carry on for mile after mile. There were no hints of stomach problems from any of the runners using the products and all agreed that they felt the gels gave them a boost. Although all credit of enhanced performance cannot be given to the gels, our testers all felt benefits of using them.

The cherry on the top…

There is a reason why runners and health professionals are raving about Chia. These superfood seeds are synonymous with being a great source of healthy omega-3 fats and fibres. Furthermore, Chia has been linked to combatting Diabetes, improving heart health and it also provides a fantastic source of protein to help the body repair and recover after exercise.

It really is a case of why wouldn’t you try Hüma, they taste fantastic, improve performance and offer health benefits. Not sure you could ask much more from your running supplement!
